What is the Safe Travel Planner?
Travelling is one of life’s richest and most rewarding experiences.
But a safe trip requires more than just a suitcase and a plane ticket.
That’s why the Government of Canada is pleased to present the Safe Travel Planner, a training program that offers reliable, up-to-date information on:
- country-specific travel advice and advisories
- documents required to travel
- travelling with children
- tips for safe travel for different audiences
- consular services, where to go for help outside Canada
- and guidance when returning to Canada
Why offer Safe Travel Planner Training?
Are you a student in a travel and tourism program, or a travel industry professional helping your clients plan their dream vacation?
If so, this Government of Canada training program is for you! It outlines what information and services are available to your clients before they leave Canada—while they’re travelling, and when they come back.
With this training session, you will be able to help your clients:
- find important information on Travel.gc.ca, the Government of Canada’s website for Canadians who are working, travelling, studying or living abroad
- make sure they have the documents and information they need before, during and at the end of their trip
- know where to go for Canadian information and services when they’re outside of Canada, including consular services available to them
Once you complete this course, you will receive a Safe Travel Planner certificate from Global Affairs Canada.
The certificate shows that you have taken additional steps to inform yourself and your clients of the many Government of Canada services and resources available to them.
For a safe, enjoyable trip that is memorable for all the right reasons.

Instructions
- We recommend that you work through the content of the Safe Travel Planner sequentially.
- When you have finished reviewing all the content, you can take the certification assessment.
- To obtain a Safe Travel Planner certificate, you will need a score of at least 70%.
- Throughout this training, we will walk through a case study about Sofia, a fictional client.
- The case study includes interactive components such as questions that will help you familiarize yourself with our website, Travel.gc.ca.
- You will be provided with links to sections or pages on the site that contain the information required to answer the questions. You will also be provided with possible answers to choose from.
- Once you’ve selected your answer, click “Validate” to get your result.
- The answers you provide for the case study do not count towards the final score to obtain the certificate, but they will help you to select the right answers in the final assessment

Case study
Meet Sofia:
Sofia, a Canadian university student, is finishing her first year of undergraduate studies. She has decided to postpone her next semester and travel outside Canada instead. Her parents are a bit concerned about the idea, but they support her decision and agree to help her out as long as her trip is well planned and safe.
Sofia's parents reach out to you, their trusted travel counsellor, to help plan a safe trip outside Canada for their daughter. Sofia also wants to be well prepared, so she will be involved in the discussions.
Sofia tells you that she has never travelled internationally without her parents. She would like to start her trip in Europe and then go to a few countries in Asia and finish in South America. She gives you a list of countries, including Norway, Poland, Türkiye, Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia, Argentina and Peru.
